Hoi allemaal!
Dag 6 – 10: Stage is begonnen!
Dag 11 -12:
Richting Ohari park gegaan. Erg mooi!
Zin in!

Day 5: Went to the mountains (Mikazukiyama) with my Chinese roommate. Of course we took the wrong and difficult path to get there, but in the end we arrived at the top!
Furthermore, we went to a temple (Niwatoriishi Shrine). Was really big and beautiful. Some children wore Kimono’s (it was a special day for them).
Day 6 – 10: My internship started! I had two meetings with professors at the first day (they are both my supervisor, I have two supervisors here in Japan). They are both really nice! And the colleagues are also really kind, but their English is not that good. At my department, there are mainly Chinese and Japanese people. The European people are at another campus, most of them are exchange students and follow courses.
Furthermore, I went to a Christmas market at Hakata station together with my roommate. Yes, they celebrate Christmas here, or.. they just let you think they celebrate it. Everything is decorated and you only hear jingle bells and other christmas songs. They also say that they eat with their family at Christmas, but I think they do this after their work. I think that I also have to work at Christmas days, unfortunately. However, the week after I have holidays (one week) :). The Christmas market is also quite small (not that many shops, and they all sell food).
At Wednesday, I went to a Japanese language course together with a chinese colleague. It was nice, also to meet some other people. It is really cheap, 100 yen (€0,76 per course)
At Thursday they organized a welcome-party for me and another person. They took a lot of pictures and it was nice to get to know each other and have a nice talk. However, there was an endtime for this party haha (just took about 1,5h). I also drunk my first Japanese beer, it was good! There were beer cans at the table, so I wanted to take one but in Japan they don’t drink from the can. They put it in little cups and share the can. Probably because they have another gene and thus they will feel the effects of the alcohol very soon. In the supermarket, you can buy small cups with beer (about 0.15ml I think).
Day 11 -12:
At Saturday we went to Ohari park. It was really beautiful and the weather was really good. It is a park with a big lake with a path through the lake that separates it into two smaller lakes. Next, we went to the Fukuoka castle, but that was not that nice. No sakura (blossom) but they were also renovating the part of the castle which is still there. After it, we went to the city to eat and drink something, but then I became ill. My stomach had enough of all the Japanese food and when we came home, everything came out again. So the day after, I stayed home.
Day 13-19:
Another internship week. So where am I working on? For now, I am mainly writing my research proposal and sometimes I learn some lab techniques. This week I also went to the animal course (which was 1,5h, while in the Netherlands we had a course of 120h). But probably I can enter the animal facility soon. I am looking forward to start my research.
So what am I going to do:
We will use knock-out mice (mice with a defect gene) and we will give them some symptoms of Multiple sclerosis (MS). Because of this defect gene, the MS symptoms will be worse (but it is not that everyone with MS has this defect gene). Next, the mice will administer a medication and we will look if the symptoms will diminish or not.
We measure their body weight and look at their symptoms. Next, we will take their spleen, lymph nodes, brain and spinal cord out and we will quantify the amount of immune cells (th1 and th17). Furthermore we will have a look at the myelin in the brain and spinal cord, because normally the myelin is damaged or absent in MS. Moreover, we will investigate when the gene deficiency will be present (it is an inducable gene, so we will inject something to activate the deficiency). All this will be performed twice, first for the acute phase and then another time for the chronic phase of MS.
At Thursday I went to the physiotherapist (or something like that), because I still had back/shoulder pain. It was funny and really different from the therapy in the Netherlands. I got electro stimulation for my back and shoulders and at the same time they putted both my legs into a bag, which got vacuum and loose again (like measuring the blood pressure). Unfortunately it didn’t help, but it was nice and relaxing.
At Friday after my internship, I had a meeting with a Polish girl, who I only knew from facebook. She was really nice and we talked for 2,5hours.
At Saturday I went to a badminton tournament that was organized by KUFSA (an international student association from Kyushu university). Unfortunately they don’t heat the sporting halls, and I think it was only 5 degrees. Brrr. But it was really nice and Japanese and Chinese people are really good in playing badminton. I also met two girls from France, which are really nice and together with them and a girl from Vietnam, we went for dinner in the evening.
